Tek vaya iki sözcükten oluşan cümlelere basit cümle denir. Genelde basit cümleler altı şekilde kullanılır. Öznesi olmayan cümlelerde Öznesi belli olan cümlelerde şahıs zamiri kullanılır. Aşağıdaki cümlenin öznesi "o"dur. İngilizce'de "o" bayan için "she", erkek için "he", diğerlerinde "it" özne olarak kullanılır. 

İngilizce'de insanlarda iyelik ekini "-s" ile yaparız ve bu eki özel isim olsun olmasın kelimeden kesme işaretiyle ayırırız. Eğer bahsettiğimiz isim çoğul eki (-s) almış bir isimse sadece ismin sonuna kesme işareti getirilir. Düzensiz çoğul olan isimlerde isimden sonra kesme işareti ve -s eki getirilir. İlk isim cansız olduğu zaman, yani bir nesnenin özelliğinden ya da bir parçasından bahsederken
