Sıfat ve zamir olarak kullanılırlar. İsimle kullanıldıklarında sıfat; yalnız kullanıldıklarında zamir yerine geçerler.

This is a man. (Bu bir adam.) - zamir

This man is young. (Bu adam genç.) - sıfat

Tekil isimleri işaret eden sözcükler:

This: bu, bunu, buna

This is my pencil. (Bu benim kalemim.)

That: şu, şunu, şuna, ve o, onu, ona

That is your hat. (Şu senin şapkan.)

Çoğul isimleri işaret eden sözcükler:

These: bunlar, bunları, bunlara

These are Zeynep’s students. (Bunlar Zeynep’in öğrencileri.)

Those: şunlar, şunları, şunlara

Those are Ahmet’s. (Şunlar Ahmet’in.)
