Yardımcı Fiiller - Modal Verbs

İngilizce' de gelmen gerekir, çayı tercih ederim, dinlemelisin, anlatabilirim gibi ifadeleri yardımcı fiiller yardımı ile oluştururuz. Bu bölümde yardımcı fiillerin nerelerde kullanılacağını göreceğiz.

CAN

1. ability:

   I can swim. (Yüzebilirim.)

2. Birşeyin nasıl yapılacağını bildiğimiz durumlarda (Knowing how sth. is done):

   I can make a cake. (Pasta yapabilirim.)

3. possibility:

   I can come to see u tomorrow. (Yarın seni görmeye gelebilirim.)

4. request:

   Can u open the door, please? (Kapıyı açabilir misin?)

5. asking for/ and givingpermission

   Can I study in this room? (Bu odada çalışabilir miyim?)
6. When u finish ur homework, you can watch TV? (Ödevini bitirdiğinde TV izleyebilirsin.)

7. prediction[question-negative]:

   Who can that be at the door? He can't be my dad. (Kapıdaki kim olabilir? Babam olamaz.)

COULD

1. With all tenses- ability

   She'll be able to keep her appointment tomorrow. (Randevusunu yarın için elde tutabilecek.)

2. opportunity:

   I' ve a week's holiday next month.I'll be able to go on a holiday. (Bir dahaki ay bir haftalık tatilim var. Tatile gidebileceğim.)

3. physical achievement(whatsb.really managed to do)

   Mary was able to answer all questions on exam paper. (Mary sınav kağıdındaki tüm soruları cevaplayabildi.)

WILL

1. determination:

   I' ll pass that exam. (Şu snıavı vereceğim.)

2. Gelecek hakkında fikir ve tahminlerde (Prediction and opinion for the future)

   It will rain. (Yağmur yağacak.)

3. promise:

   I'll do whatever u say. (Sen her ne dersen yapacağım.)

4. unavoidable situations:

   Accidents will happen. (Kazalar olacak.)

5. rejection:

   I'll not talk to you. (Seninle konuşmayacağım.)

6. willingness-intention:

   I'll help you to do the works. (İşlerini yapmada sana yardım edeceğim.)

7. invitation-offer:

   Will u have some tea? (Biraz çay alır mısınız?)

WOULD

• polite request:

  Lütfen kapıyı açar mısınız? (Would you open the door?)

• questionsindicatingunbelievablesituations

  Who would make such a big mistake? (Kim bu kadar büyük bir hata yapabilir)

• wish,if onlyve "what" kalıplarından sonra istek belirtmek için (to show desire for the presents after wish, if only, what):

  I wish I would study harder. (Keşke daha çok çalışsam.)

MAY

1. ask for/givepermission-request:

   May I come in? (İçeri gelebilir miyim?)
   You may leave when you finish? (Bitirince ayrılabilirsin.)

2. probability-reasonableguess:

   Don't touch it! It may be hot. (Ona dokunma! Sıcak olabilir.)

3. Getting ready to showcontradiction:

   She may not be very pretty but she is very good at his job. (Çok şirin olmayabilir ama işinde çok iyi.)

4. desire, wish:

   May she rest in peace! (Huzur içinde yatsın!)

MIGHT

1. probability(weaker than may):

   I don't know where he is, he might be at work. (Nerede olduğunu bilmiyorum. İşte olabilir.)

2. ask for permission/ request [polite]:

   Might I use your phone? (Telefonunuzu kullanabilir miyim?)

MUST

1. strongnecessity:

   The lecture must begin right now. (Ders şimdi başlamalı.)

2. prediction-deductionabout a present situation):

   He looks terrible.He must be ill. (Berbat görünüyor. Hasta olmalı.)

3. prohibition:

   You mustn't speak during the exam. (Sınav sırasında konuşmamalısınız.)

SHOULD

1. duty, necessity - weaker than must),advice:

   He should get up early. (Erken kalkması gerekir.)

2. prediction: Türkçe' de de gerekir kelimesini tahminlerde kullanıyoruz.

   Helen took dancing lessons for years. She should be a good dancer. (Helen yıllarca dans dersleri aldı. İyi bir dansçı olması gerekir.)

OUGHT TO

1. duty:

   We ought to study. (Ders çalışmamız lazım.)

2. advice:

   You ought to eat less. (Daha az yemen lazım.)

3. expectation:

   My friend works hard. He ought to be successful. (Arkadaşım çok çalışır. Başarılı olması lazım.)

HAD BETTER

1. advice

   You had better explain this. (Bunu açıklasan iyi olur.)

2. warn:

   You had better not visit him.He has been so angry recently. (Onu ziyaret etmesen iyi olur. Son zamanlarda çok sinirli.)

BE SUPPOSED TO

1. duty =should:

   She's supposed to clean all the rooms. (Tüm odaları temizlemesi gerekir.)

2. general belief:

   Milk is supposed to be good for health. (Süt sağlık için yararlı olmalı.)

3. planned action:

   The plane is supposed to leave at 5. (Uçağın 5' te kalkması gerekir.)

4. prohibition:

   You are not supposed to leave the class before afternoon. (Öğleden önce sınıftan ayrılmaman gerekir.)

WOULD RATHER

1. preference:

   Would u like tea or coffee?I'd rather have coffee than tea. (Çay mı kahve mi istersiniz? Çaydansa kahve almayı tercih ederim.)

2. Ben-biz harici öznelerde geçmiş yapıyla (past but the meaning is present):

   I'd rather you didn't ask difficult questions. (Zor sorular sormamanı tercih ederim.)

USED TO

1. past habit:

   I used to get up early. (Erken kalkardım.)

2. beused to- Ving):

   I am used to working too much. (Çok çalışmaya alışığım.)
