Why People Learning English Have Trouble with the Language - "UP"

There is a two-letter word in English that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that word is 'UP'. It is listed in the dictionary as being used as an , [prep], , [n] or [v].

It's easy to understandUP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do wewake UP? At a meeting, why does a topiccome UP ? Why do wespeak UP, and why are the officersUP forelection and why is itUP tothe secretary towrite UPa report? Wecall UPour friends and we use it tobrighten UPa room,polish UPthe silver, wewarm UPthe leftovers andclean UPthe kitchen. Welock UPthe house and some guysfix UPthe old car. At other times the little word has a real special meaning. Peoplestir UPtrouble,line UPfor tickets,work UPan appetite, andthink UPexcuses.

To be dressed is one thing but to bedressed UPis special. And this UP is confusing;

A drain must beopened UPbecause it isstopped UP.

Weopen UPa store in the morning but weclose it UPat night. We seem to be prettymix UPabout UP!

To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP,look the word UPin the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, ittakes UPalmost 1/4 of the page and canadd UPto about thirty definitions.

If you areUP toit, you might trybuilding UPa list of the many ways UP is used. It willtake UPa lot of your time, but if you don'tgive UP, you maywind UPwith a hundred or more.

When it threatens to rain, we say it isclouding UP. When the sun comes out we say it isclearing UP. When it rains, itwets UPthe earth. When it does not rain for awhile, thingsdry UP.

One could go on & on, but I'llwrap it UP, for now ....mytime is UP, so it's time toshut UP!
