Turks go iftar shopping as Ramadan approaches - Ramazan yaklaştıça iftar alışverişine çıkılıyor

As the Islamic month of Ramadanapproaches, people in Turkey are choosinglocalmarkets over supermarkets as they shop for iftar, the evening meal when Muslimsbreaktheirfast.

According toan analysis in the Ulus Hali, amarketplacein Ankara, an iftar meal for a four-people family costs between 15 Turkish Liras and 20 liras.

People who want to break their fasts with alternative meals from worldcuisinesin five-star hotels and at luxury restaurants mustallocatemore for their iftarbudgets, of course. Pricesper headat luxury restaurants start at 30 liras, while those in five-star hotels start at 41 liras.

Restaurantrepresentativessay that people who want to break their Ramadan fast inhigh-endrestaurants should make early reservations.

People coming to the Ulus Hali are also thinkingahead, having already begun their iftar shopping as they think there might be a pricehikein products.

The first week of Ramadan every year sees anincreaseof nearly 25 percent inagriculturalproducts, according to shopkeepers in Ulus Hali. However, thedeclinein customerdemanddue to price hikes there is less than at many of the supermarkets.

A food-price analysis at the Ulus Hali shows that one kilogram ofdate, a food that is a "must' for any iftar meal,variesin cost between 5 liras and 25 liras. One kilogram of olives is priced between 5 liras and 11 liras. Prices for pastırma (cured spiced beef) areunrivaledat highs this Ramadan, varying between 36 liras and 60 liras.

Vegetables andlegumesare favored for iftar shopping this year, as meat prices have not declined to normal levels.Low-incomefamilies do not prefer cured spiced beef and spicy sausagedue tohigh temperatures and expensive prices.
