Tens of peoplelosetheir lives in traffic accidents everydayduringthe summer in Turkey, indicating that people'sattitudestoward driving have not been influenceddespitetheharrowingstatistics.

The number of traffic accidentfatalitiesMonday was 28, while the total number ofinjurieswas 149 across theentirecountry, the daily Milliyet reported Tuesday. News agencies had also reported 15 fatalities and 76 injuries from car accidents on Tuesday as the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review went to press.

During June, July and August of 2009, 930 people were killed and 50,652 injured in 27,000 traffic accidents.

Compared tolast years' statistics at Police Department headquarters in Ankara, the number of accidents during May this year decreased by 13.2 percent,whereasfatalities fell by 7.5 percent compared to last year's figures, Anatolia news agency reported Tuesday. The number of injured people, however, rose by 2.4 percent during May this year, compared to the previous year.

There arevariousmechanical factors affecting theprobabilityof being involved in a car accident, such as speed,vehicleweightand technical characteristics. Other factors which affect the possibility of being involved in an accident arevisibility, thestructureof the road, thefrequencyof corners and the number ofpedestriancrossings.

According to authorities, most driversviolatetraffic rules,especiallyduring summer, due to hightemperaturelevels and the highconcentrationofmoisture. Officialsadvisedpeople to avoid driving during thehottestperiod of the day.

In the eventpeople must travel to other cities, expertsrecommendthat they use public transportation such as buses, trains, planes, ships and ferries, rather than their own cars.

Should drivers have to use their own cars, they are advised to make all the necessary technical adjustments and check toensurethe safety of their vehicles, especiallybrakes, front lights andtires. Those who have bought the car onlyrecentlyare advised to know the technical specifics of the vehicle. Drivers are also advised to be relaxed and rested beforeembarkingon long trips and to stop and rest frequently during the trip.

Authorities say they havedeployedpolice forces to monitor traffic during the summer, when the number accidentsincreasealongside the number of people traveling to and from summer holidays.
