Trabzon eager to host first-ever rugby game

ISTANBUL

The people in the Black Seaprovinceof Trabzon are excited for arugbymatch on Saturday - despite few in theareaknowing what the sport is.

Trabzon willhosta game for the first time in history whenGeorgiaplaysRussiaat Trabzon's Akçaabat Fatih Stadium in the final game of the European Nations Cup Division 1. The game was to be played in Georgia, but was moved toneutralgroundout of safetyconcerns.

Georgia also wanted the match to be played in Trabzon.

Aconflicteruptedon Aug. 7, 2008, between the two countries when Georgiashelledthe breakaway region of South Ossetia in anattempttoregaincontrol over it.

Russian forces quicklyrepelledtheassaultand pushed back into Georgia in a conflict thatlastedfor five days until aceasefirewassigned. Diplomatic relations between the two, however, have not beenrestoredsince the war.

The game was to be played at Trabzonspor's Avni Aker Stadium, but the Turkcell Super League side did not want "thepitchto be destroyed one day before a very important game.'

Trabzonspor hosts second-place Galatasaray on Sunday night.

Moving the game to a much smaller stadium has made it difficult for Georgian fans, who havepouredinto the province, to find tickets.

The Anatolia news agency reported that the owners of housesoverseeingthe stadium are ready to host Georgianfans.

Kadem Marufoğlu, whose balcony has a full view of the Fatih Stadium, had no idea what rugby was and did not know a game wasscheduledfor Saturday.

"The Black Sea and Trabzon people are allfocusedon football, I've never heard of rugby,' he said, but added that his doors would be open to the visitors. "I will show them true Turkish hospitality.'

Mehmet Salih Güven also has no idea about rugby. "I know Akçaabat Sebatspor, Tabzonspor, football, but I've never heard of rugby,' he said, but also added that he would invite thespectatorsto his house. "The house is perfectly located, and I will notchargethe visitors. I can even offer them tea and coffee.' Güven said both teams'supportersare welcome in his house, but said he would support Georgia in the game.
