Synopsis:
It is a tale of a little girl growing up and finding her place in the world. She is arestlesssoul whorefusestoobeythe rules. Marjane is aninnocentnine-year-old girl living in Iran, surrounded by a loving butincrediblyprotective mother and father. She feels comfortable near hereasygoinggrandmother. When Marjane's uncle is killed in the Iran/Iraq war, her parents send her to school in Austria at the age of fourteen where she can study in safety. But there is a problem. Her Middle Easternappearancefrightens people. She has to fight beingequatewith religion and be judged ofracediscrimination. She is disappointed and troubled. Over time, she gainsacceptancebut after high school she finds herself alone and she isextremelysuffering ofhomesickness. At the end, she returns home to Iran to be close to her family.
It means putting onveiland some other problems. She has difficultyadjustingbut she shouldresist. She enters art school and she marries in Iran. Unfortunately, her marriage falls apart and thingscome to headwhen a party israidby the police. Her friend is killed while he is trying to escape. After theseincidentsand her divorce, the family decides that Marjane must leave the country again. Marjane agrees, and her grandmother dies soon after herdeparture.
What Marjane always thinks about is that she needs to find a place, bothwithinthe world and within herself, where she can feel at home. She has longlasting memories on her way to France which willshapeher future but she is hopeful.
