OLD GRAMMAR TRANSLATION

  • How does the teacher start the lesson?

Immediately introduces the topic.

  • How is the movement of the teacher in the classroom?

Always in front.

  • Are the students active or passive?

Passive. If the teacher asks, they are active while answering.

  • Does the teacher use real objects, pictures etc?

  • Does the teacher correct student errors? How?

Yes. By saying the true one. If a student makes a mistake, the teacher asks another one.

  • Does the teacher gives rules explicitly or implicitly?

Explicitly.

  • Does the teacher use L1 or L2 as classroom language?

L1

  • Is the teacher friendly?

No.

  • Which skill does the teacher heavily emphasize?

Reading and translation.

  • Which language area is more emphasized? Grammar or vocabulary?

Vocabulary. Usually both of them.

  • Does the teacher provide the learners with enough examples and exercises?

  • Does the teacher emphasize pronunciation?

  • For which level or age group do you think this method can be appropriate and for what purpose?

You can apply it at any age group.

Reviewing the principles

 
The principles of each approach are organised below by answering the ten questions. Not at all the questions are addressed by each approach. All the questions, however, are listed so that it ll be easier for you to make comparisons among the approaches.
 
  • What are the goals of teachers who use methods based on this approach?

  • What is the role of the teacher? What is the role of the students?

Leader, authority. Sts just obey the teacher. They just do whatever the teacher wants.

 
  • What are the some characteristics of the teaching / learning process?

Translation, Explicit / deductive grammar teaching, Memorisation of vocabulary / grammar rules.

 
  • What is the nature of student - teacher interaction? What is the nature of student - student interaction?

The teacher initiates. There is little sts' initiation. So mostly from teacher to student. S - S interaction: when one of the students asks one thing the other one answers it. If the peer cannot answer then the teacher tells the truth.

 
  • How are the feelings of the students dealt with?

Sts' feelings are not important in this method.

 
  • How is the language viewed? How is the culture viewed?

Literal language is superior over spoken language. Culture is viewed as literature.

 
  • What areas of language emphasized? What language skills are emphasized?

Both grammar and vocabulary. Reading and writing.

 
  • What is the role of the students' native language?

Meaning is made clear through using native language.

 
  • How is the evaluation accomplished?

Give a passage and want them to translate. Vocabulary.

 
  • How does the teacher respond to students' errors?

It is a must to give a correct answer. Your job is to teach vocabulary and grammar. Students errors are seen as a natural, indispensable part of the learning process. The teacher uses students' errors to decide where further work is necessary. Self-correction, peer-correction but not teacher correction. The text should come literary passage of the L2.
