COMMUNICATIVE APPROACH

  • How does the teacher start the lesson?

The teacher starts the lesson by immediately introducing the topic and the function.

  • How is the movement of the teacher in the classroom?

The teacher walks around the class and also at the front.

  • Are the students active or passive?

Sts are mostly active.

  • Does the teacher use real objects, pictures etc?

The teacher uses real objects, pictures such as maps.

  • Does the teacher correct student errors? How?

Errors are tolerated. Communication is more important than accuracy. But if there is an error effecting communication, s/he will correct the student.

  • Does the teacher gives rules explicitly or implicitly?

The teacher gives the rules implicitly. S/he gives the function explicitly. E.g. how to ask for help?

  • Does the teacher use L1 or L2 as classroom language?

L1 can't be used. Learning English throughout English.

  • Is the teacher friendly?

The teacher is friendly.

  • Which skill does the teacher heavily emphasize?

The teacher heavily emphasizes speaking and listening. Writing at homeworks.

  • Which language area is more emphasized? Grammar or vocabulary?

Vocabulary over grammar is emphasized. Because mostly the words interpret the meaning.

  • Does the teacher provide the learners with enough examples and exercises?

The teacher provides examples and creates activities for sts to give examples, to practise the structure. Sts are clear abaout what they are doing.

  • Does the teacher emphasize pronunciation?

It should be emphasized in advance levels, not in beginning levels. Together with language proficiency, pronunciation becomes important.

Reviewing the principles

 
The principles of each approach are organised below by answering the ten questions. Not at all the questions are addressed by each approach. All the questions, however, are listed so that it'll be easier for you to make comparisons among the approaches.
 
  • What are the goals of teachers who use methods based on this approach?

Fluency and acceptable language is the primary goal. To enable the sts to develop their communicative competence is important.

 
  • What is the role of the teacher? What is the role of the students?

The teacher is adviser, guider, source of guide. He prepares available activities for negotiation.

 
  • What are the characteristics of the teaching / learning process?

To make them learn the strategies used while interacting in a social group. Role plays are important parts of the syllabus. To enable your sts use language same as native users. Use of authentic material. You always consider the context.

 
  • What is the nature of students - teacher interaction? What is the nature of student - student interaction?

Teacher - student centred. Both of them considered as a whole person. T - S communication is very limited. S - S interaction is the purpose.

 
  • How are the feelings of the students dealt with?

They are asked how they feel. Secure, comfortable, motivated. The teacher is friendly. They know the TL environment, they can use the language, they use in the class. They can level their language all the social factors. They are motivated because it is motivating.

 
  • How is the language viewed? How is the culture viewed?

Language is for communication. Since the focus is on language usage we have to consider all the social factors (culture) authentic material.

 
  • What areas of language emphasized? What language skills are emphasized?

Functions are more important than forms. Skills are presented all together.

 
  • What is the role of the students' native language?

No role. It is not allowed to use.

 
  • How is the evaluation accomplished?

Your test should have an communicative purpose.

 
  • How does the teacher respond to students' errors?

You can simply disregard. Achieve the communicative purpose.
