İstanbul'da YÖK Protestosunda On Öğrenci Gözaltına Alındı - Ten Students Detained in YÖK Protest in Istanbul

Ten students weredetainedfollowing aclashwith the police during a protest Friday outside the Higher Education Council in Istanbul, Doğan news agency reported.

The clash broke out outside the Swissotel in the Maçka neighborhood of Istanbul, where the Higher Education Council is held. Some 1,000youthsfrom student unions gathered at Dolmabahçe and tried to walk near the hotelchantingslogans against Turkey’s Higher Education Board, or YÖK, including “Universities are ours,” “We will take YÖK out of schools,” and “We won’t back down.”

The students were met by police, who used tear gas and pressurized water todispersethe crowd and prevent them from arriving at the hotel area. Ten people were detained.

The council organized by YÖK is a three-day eventcompiledof a series of meetings focusing on “New Directions and Problems” in education.
