The academic writing part takes nearly 60 minutes.
There are two tasks.
Below the task types are explained in detail and points that you should pay attention for a higher band in IELTS academic writing. The information below is a combination of my own experiences as a teacher and extracts from IELTS preperation books.
IELTS ACADEMIC WRITING - TASK 1
The first task takes 20 mins and you are asked to write a report about a graph, table, bar chart or diagram, min. of 150 words.
Your writing will be graded according to task completion, variety of vocabulary and grammar, organization and development.
Key to Success - Task 1
Do the first task; it is easier so it can give you a sense of confidence.
Don’t spend more than 20 mins so that you have enough time for the second task.
Don’t underestimate the first task even if the second one will gain you the double mark.
You can spend your time as suggested below:
2-3 mins analysing and planning
14-15 mins writing
2-3 mins checking
Check the values and numbers on the vertical and horizontal axes.
Check the number of the words and make sure that your writing isn’t less than 15o words; it will affect your score to some extent.
Compare general trends and differences and support this with the information from the diagram. Avoid focusing too closely on the details.
Make sure you organize the information in a good shape: an introduction, one or two paragraphs for the body of the text. Then write a brief conclusion.
IELTS ACADEMIC WRITING - TASK 2
The second task takes 40 mins. You are supposed to write an essay and discuss an argument, opinion or a point of view.
You may be asked to write about one or more specific aspects of the topic; causes, effects, solutions, factors, problems, measures, steps, proposal, recommendations, suggestions, arguments of other people for/against, reasons, dangers, advantages and/or disadvantages, etc.
Your writing will be graded according to variety of vocabulary, organisation and development.
It doesn’t matter in which subject you are specialized; your academic proficiency isn’t tested.
Key to Success - Task 2
Use the question to help you organize your answer.
Check the general topic. It can be a problem, a point of view or a statement consisting of two opposing view.
Check how many parts are there in the questions.
Plan to write about five paragraphs & don’t forget to put a title.
Take few notes about what you’ll write for each paragraphs – one idea for each.
Roughly count your word to be sure that it’s not less than 250. That will cause you to lose points.
Read your essay quickly in the end for checking.
BEFORE THE EXAM - DON'T FORGET
Prepare the questions in the task 2 by using available books.
Familiarize yourself with the basic structure of essay question and the rubric.
The question usually contains a statement which describes a general situation followed by specific points to write about.
You need to give reasons and support with examples. You should also give your own opinion.
Focus first on the organizing words e.g. causes, effects, solutions, etc.
If question goes like “To what extent do you agree?”, it means you can also disagree with the statement
