“REPLY” & “ANSWER” are synonym words but there are small differences between them. When there is an object after answer there is nothing in between; however, reply is used with “to”.
answer somebody/something
Have you answered the letter? (Mektuba cevap verdin mi?)
They didn’t answer my questions (Sorularıma cevap vermediler.)
reply to something/someone
No one has replied to the invitation yet. (Henüz kimse daveti cevaplamadı.)
REPLY is usually used for reporting actual sentences:
“I don’t really believe you are honest!” the man replied. (“Gerçekten dürüst olduğunuza inanmıyorum.” diye yanıtladı adam.)
She replied that her parents were divorced years ago. (Anne babasının yıllar önce boşandığı cevabını verdi.)
RESPOND is more formal and less commonly used in the daily language.
Anyone can easily tell that the manager responded the questions neglectfully. (Herkes müdürün sorulara umursamaz bir şekilde cevap verdiğini kolayca söyleyebilir.)
You can reply to/respond/answer a letter/question/offer/invitation/query/complaint but you can only answer a phone and door.
